Is Vincent Lafforgue eligible for the Fields Medal?

    • Thomas Sauvaget Says:

I couldn’t find his year of birth online, but according to this article he was 31 years old in february 2005, so he is already above 40 and thus ineligible.

Thanks. According to the official rules: “a recipient’s 40th birthday must not occur before 1 January of the year in which the Fields Medal is awarded”. If the age mentioned in the article is correct, this means that V. Lafforgue’s 40th birthday happened before February 9th, 2014. This does not completely exclude the possibility that this birthday happened between January 1st, 2014 and February 9th, 2014.

Given the data mentioned you’re technically right, time will tell.

I have just found V. Lafforgue’s birth date in “Annuaire des élèves de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure 1992-1993”: [edit: redacted*] ==> he *is* eligible.

[edit: I have redacted the date since of course I won’t allow what seems to be private information to appear here.]

Very recently V.Lafforgue has added a cv on his website, which shows that he is indeed eligible.
